Volunteer FAQ

Everything people ask us.Read this before you book the flight.

Thinking about joining the pack in Peru? Here are the answers to the questions we hear most. Can't find yours? Write to [email protected].

Before you come

Do I need experience with dogs, a degree or Spanish?

No. Most of our Pack Keepers have never worked with rescue dogs before. We'll show you everything on your first day. Spanish helps, especially for the Messengers, but a willingness to learn and a big smile go a long way.

How old do I have to be?

Volunteers need to be 18 or older. Volunteers aged 16 and 17 are welcome when a parent or guardian is on site with them the whole time.

How long should I stay?

At least one week. Dogs need time to trust a new face, and you need a few days to find your rhythm. Most people stay two to four weeks, and most of them wish they'd stayed longer.

Which vaccinations do I need?

Two are required for everyone who works with the dogs:

  • Rabies pre-exposure, a course of shots completed before you arrive. Start early: it can take several weeks.
  • A current tetanus shot.

Talk to a travel clinic or your doctor about anything else they recommend for Peru.

Do I need a visa?

Many nationalities can visit Peru without a visa for tourism, but the rules depend on your passport and change from time to time. Please check with your government's travel advice or the Peruvian embassy before you book.

Should I get travel insurance?

Yes, please. Choose a policy that covers medical care and emergencies abroad.

Costs, travel and where to stay

Who pays for flights and accommodation?

You cover your own flights, lodging, food and local transport. Once you've applied, we'll point you to friendly, affordable places to stay nearby.

Where exactly will I be?

Our work is in and around Lima, Peru. We'll share the exact meeting point and directions with you after your application, before you book anything.

What's the weather like in Lima?

Mild most of the year. From about June to October the sky is often grey and cool, so bring layers. From about December to April it's warm and sunny, so bring sun protection.

Working with the pack

What does a typical day look like?

It depends on your crew. For Pack Keepers, the day starts with the breakfast shift, then cleaning, fresh water, walks, brushing and nail trims. The quietest job matters most: sitting with a frightened dog until she decides to trust you. Healers join spay, neuter and vaccination days. Builders work on kennels, shade, fences and water lines.

Is it safe?

You'll always work alongside our team. On your first day we'll walk you through how we approach dogs, read their body language, and use muzzles and leads where needed. You'll never be asked to handle a dog you're not comfortable with. This is also why rabies and tetanus vaccinations are required.

I'm a vet or vet tech. What should I bring?

Please bring your licence details so we can plan the right work for you, and tell us your experience in the inquiry form. Healers help with spay and neuter days and vaccination rounds, and teach alongside our Peruvian team.

Can I bring a group?

Yes! Schools, universities, companies and churches are all welcome. Tell us your group's size and dates in the inquiry form, and we'll build a programme around you.

Can I help without travelling to Peru?

Absolutely. Join the Far-Away Crew: grant writing, translation, photography, video editing, social media and web work, from anywhere and at any hours.
